LED torches - mobile light for every application

Flashlights are used in many households and professional settings as portable light sources. A traditional flashlight is a mobile light source suitable for different situations. Headlamps, handheld flashlights and mini flashlights are available in various designs and from different brands. MAUL offers different LED flashlights with varying sizes, light outputs and features. Browse the available models and choose one that suits your intended use.
What types of LED flashlights are available?
One widely used type of LED flashlight is the handheld flashlight. While many flashlights used incandescent bulbs in the past, LED technology is now commonly used. LED stands for “Light-Emitting Diode”. Compared with traditional incandescent bulbs, LEDs can achieve a higher luminous efficacy with lower energy consumption. LED technology is therefore used in many modern flashlights. Depending on the model, possible advantages include lower energy consumption, long operating times and different brightness settings. Light colour, beam shape and adjustment options depend on the specific product. In addition to handheld flashlights, other designs are available, as outlined below.
LED handheld flashlight
The handheld flashlight is a widely used type of portable light source. It is available in different sizes and designs and can be used for various household, professional and hobby applications.
LED headlamp
A headlamp is worn on the head using a headband and is often used for outdoor activities such as hiking, jogging or climbing. This keeps both hands free. Depending on the model, the light beam can be directed towards different areas. Headlamps can also be used for repair work, DIY tasks and other activities. Battery life depends on the individual model, selected brightness level and operating conditions.
LED mini flashlight
An LED mini flashlight is a compact version of a traditional handheld flashlight. Its small size allows it to be carried easily, for example on a key ring or in a bag. Depending on the size, battery and model, light output and operating time may be lower than those of larger flashlights.
UV flashlight
UV flashlights produce ultraviolet light and are intended for specific applications. Depending on wavelength and design, they may be used, for example, to make certain UV markings or fluorescent substances visible. Certain UV lamps are also used in specialist inspection and control applications. Always follow the relevant safety and manufacturer instructions concerning eye and skin exposure.
LED flashlights are powered by batteries or rechargeable batteries depending on the model. Dynamo flashlights are also available. With these products, the required electrical energy is generated mechanically, for example using a hand crank. The achievable light output depends on the design and model. Depending on the version, dynamo flashlights may be used as an additional light source during power failures or in other situations where no power source is available.
LED flashlight features at a glance
LEDs are commonly used in portable light sources. Depending on the model, LED flashlights may offer different technical and functional features.
- Some models are designed to be impact- or shock-resistant according to their product specifications
- Many models offer multiple brightness levels or a dimming function
- Depending on the model, lower energy consumption may reduce battery use or charging requirements
- Performance data varies by model
- Luminous flux and luminous efficacy can be found in the respective product specifications
- Weight and dimensions vary depending on the model
- Grip design and operation differ between models
What can LED flashlights be used for?
LED flashlights are available for a variety of private and professional applications. They can be used, for example, in workshops, households, hobbies, field work or other mobile tasks where a portable light source is required. Depending on the model, an LED flashlight may be a suitable mobile light source for different situations. Portable lights are also used in various professional environments, including fire services, rescue services and technical operations. The appropriate model depends on the intended use and specific requirements.
What should you consider when buying an LED flashlight?
Flashlights differ in terms of light output, operating time, equipment, construction and protection rating. The following characteristics may be useful when selecting a model for a particular application:
- visual comfort
- visual performance
- safety
- beam distance or range
- luminous flux or lumen rating
- operating time
- energy consumption
- illuminance or lux rating
- colour temperature or light colour
- available functions and equipment, such as focus and dimming options
- specified service life
Beam distance / luminous flux
Beam distance and luminous flux describe different characteristics of a flashlight. Luminous flux is measured in lumens ("lm") and describes the total amount of visible light emitted. Beam distance indicates the distance over which a specified level of illuminance can be achieved. Refer to the respective product specifications for detailed values.
A higher luminous flux generally means that more visible light is emitted overall. However, it does not by itself indicate how strongly the light is focused. A long beam distance combined with relatively low luminous flux may indicate a tightly focused beam. Conversely, high luminous flux with a shorter range may indicate a wider light distribution. On focusable models, the beam concentration can be adjusted depending on the design.
Illuminance
Illuminance is measured in lux ("lx") and depends, among other factors, on the distance between the light source and the illuminated surface. Lux values are therefore particularly meaningful when the relevant measurement distance is also provided.
Focus and dimming
A focus function may be useful when switching between wide-area illumination at close range and a narrower beam for greater distances. Depending on the model, using a lower brightness setting may reduce energy consumption and extend operating time. Refer to the relevant technical specifications.
Range
If an LED flashlight is intended for activities such as night hiking or for illuminating larger outdoor areas, beam distance may be an important criterion. It depends on factors including luminous flux, light distribution, optics and illuminance in the central beam. The required range should be selected according to the intended use and the relevant product specifications.
Operating time
Operating time is an important selection criterion and depends on factors such as battery capacity, brightness level and operating mode. The required operating time should reflect the intended application. Refer to the respective product specifications for runtime information.
Housing
Depending on the model, LED flashlights are available with aluminium or plastic housings, among other materials. Aluminium housings may provide a high level of mechanical resistance depending on their construction. However, suitability for outdoor use depends on the overall design, protection rating and product specifications rather than on the housing material alone.
Weight
The weight of an LED flashlight may be relevant if the light needs to be held or carried for extended periods. For outdoor use, the protection rating, housing construction and impact resistance may be relevant criteria. Weight and light output depend on factors including product size, battery, optics and other technical components. Requirements for everyday use may differ from those for outdoor or professional applications.
Features
LED flashlights are available with different features. Which functions are useful depends on the intended application. Depending on the model, features may include carrying straps, clips, magnetic mounts, different lighting modes such as flashing or SOS modes, protection features or a focus function.
